About typeye

What typeye does, how identification works, and how the project is funded.

What typeye is

typeye is a browser-based typeface identifier. Upload a screenshot or a photo of a sign, frame one line, and it ranks the typefaces that fit. Identification needs no account, and the image is read in your browser rather than uploaded.

How identification works

The catalog contains 2,004 open-source families from Google Fonts, with their weights and italics. When you press Identify, your crop is compared with those families on your device. The first run downloads the model and catalog once; later runs can work offline.

Results are ranked candidates, not a single verdict. Each one carries a similarity score, its licence and a link to its source. On photos the ranking is less certain than on rendered text, and the interface says so.

What it does not do

  • It does not identify commercial families such as Helvetica, Gotham or Futura. The catalog is open-licence only.
  • It does not upload your image. Re-ranking may request candidate font files from Google Fonts by family name; the image and the word you type stay in the tab.
  • It does not promise a perfect answer. The scores rank similarity to the crop, not probability.

How it is funded

Identification is free, unlimited and needs no account. Paid plans add batch recognition and ticket support. There is no per-image credit and no login wall on the free tool.

Contact

typeye is an independent project. The catalog contains only families under open licences (SIL OFL, Apache 2.0 or UFL).
